If you're familiar with Dragon Fruit, the flower of Bitter Ginger resembles it, although it cannot be eaten like Dragon Fruit. The early flower is green, and it turns red as it matures. Finding this plant in Indonesia is easy during the rainy season. You can often spot it along hiking trails where it’s moist enough, in lowland shady areas, and on hillsides.
This plant typically reaches a height of about 1 meter but can grow taller in more suitable environments depending on where it’s grown.

Bitter Ginger extract can be used to treat flatulence, stomach acid, blood sugar issues, fever, headaches, and appetite problems. To use it, you can boil it in a glass of water until the water is reduced by half, then drink it. Another method is to drink the juice from previously mashed and squeezed Bitter Ginger.
The young green leaves of the Bitter Ginger plant can be made into a salad. In Indonesia, this salad is called Urap or Urab. It consists of grated young coconut mixed with chili, onion, salt, and other local spices. This salad is good for treating flatulence and stimulating the appetite.
The juice from the Bitter Ginger flower can be used as a hair conditioner and body lotion. To use it, squeeze the red mature flower to extract the juice, then apply it as a shampoo, conditioner, or body lotion. It makes the hair and skin feel smooth.
